Chihayafuru (2016)

Evening peeps! It's Sunday! I am back for another weekly post. For this post, I will be blogging about the movie Chihayafuru (ちはやふる). The movie was release this year's spring in Japan and it made quite an impression on me. There are 2 parts to the movie and I watched them on the plane while I was traveling to Japan and back to Singapore. The movie is based on a manga written by Suetsugu Yuki (末次由紀).

Manga Cover and movie poster comparison

The movie Chihayafuru (ちはやふる) is about a traditional card game, Karuta where players has to know what the reader of the game is saying and swiping the correct card arranged on tatami mat, the arrangement of the cards seems to be fixed for both players however, left-handed and right-handed players may tackle the game differently.

Screen grabs from the movie

Chihaya Ayase played by Hirose Suzu (広瀬 すず) is the main female lead whom the film's name is based on too. Chihaya has 2 best friends named Taichi and Arata played by Nomura Shuhei (野村 周平) and Mackenyu (まっけんゆう) respectively. They are a trio team whom won the junior championship in the game while they are little. However, Arata has to move back to his hometown the following year after the championship due to his grandpa's health is in critical condition. Leaving Chihaya and Taichi back in Tokyo.

Chihaya and Taichi met up in high school after few years where they both stop contacting. Both of them started a Karuta club and recruited 3 more players. Then the team followed up with team championship and with the help of the members, both Chihaya and Taichi also entered the individual championship. They also met up with Arata whom was the former champion and Shinobu, the queen of Kurata in the competition. The movie didn't further continue on whom is the winner. But seeing the top 4 players in Japan facing one another is really breathtaking.

If you are here, I will do my best.

In conclusion, the movie is quite a good watch. The movie also endorsed by the popular J-Pop group, Perfume. The movie theme track is pretty catchy too. I enjoyed the song and of course the plot of the movie. I have roughly wrapped up this post, be sure to drop by next week for more reads!
